Technically, you can make pesto with a lot of different herbs, but none is better than basil. Of course, there are plenty of other things to use basil in - drinks, salads, soups, pasta, and desserts - but pesto, basil's true calling, requires quantity, hense the 4-pack. Plant 4-8" apart.
