We named our farm after The Farthest Field, a beloved folk song by David Dodson that reflects the sense of connection and belonging we draw from our circle of friends, neighbors, and loved ones. These are the same hopes we have for our farm, a place of gathering, relationship, expression, and nourishment.

It’s been a while since we’ve hosted a farm volunteer day, and we’re excited to see old faces and new ones! Come get your hands in the dirt with us the next two Wednesday evenings, 7/22 and 7/29, 5-8pm at the farm (3 Prout Rd in Freeport). Hope to see you there!

If you want any of our fresh greens or veggies in the meantime, run on down to @bowstreetmarket and pick up some of our lettuce, kale, spinach, cukes, snap peas, or scallions, not to mention our hot sauce! We’ll see you at the Freeport Farmers Market next Friday, 7/10, and at the Bowdoinham Farmers Market next Saturday! We’ll have some gorgeous eggplant, shishito, and tomatoes to welcome in midsummer.

Spring round up as we head into summer! We’re so behind on sharing about the farm because we’ve grown a lot in the past year, and finishing our infrastructure while operating at close to our full scale is taking every waking minute. So much to do as the farm comes to life!
1. Carrots are finally here (woohoo!) displayed by Joni, who is with us for two months as a WWOOF volunteer.
2. Cucumbers are coming! We lost quite a few to damping off, a cold related disease, but we’ll still have plenty for the farmers market and some wholesale.
3. Bagged greens are going fast at @bowstreetmarket! They are a terrific supporter of local small farms and we’re thrilled to be deepening our partnership with them.
4. Tomatoes are blooming and booming! That means ripe fruit aren’t far behind. We’re growing slicers, paste tomatoes, heirlooms, and a range of cherry tomatoes, about 10 varieties in all. Stay posted and stay hungry!
5. Freeport Farmers Market is open for the season! Every Friday from 10-1pm in Memorial Park, it is bustling more than ever! With 17 regular vendors, 4 day tables, music every week and family activities, we’re thrilled to be a part of this growing third space in Freeport.
6. Snap peas are getting close! We’ll be rolling in them before long - soon available by the pint at the Freeport and Bowdoinham farmers markets.
7. Still one more week of seedlings at the Freeport Farmers market this Friday, then done for the season. We think our seedling production doubled in size from last year, and we’re looking forward to growing even more in 2027.
8. Not everything is sunshine and roses! Our new in-ground irrigation, clay soil, and a wet spring has resulted in a lot of flooding and emergency drainage earthworks. We’re always having to juggle priorities, and putting in drainage pipe suddenly jumped right up to the top. Farming sure has a learning curve to it, since every space has its own specific needs.

We are SO excited to share about the collaboration that we just wrapped up last week with @halie_goodspeed ‘s engineering class at @freeport_hs! Last year was a bad year for insect pests, and our options are limited as a no-spray farm. Birds to the rescue and bugs are on the menu! The students researched the ideal shape and positioning for different native bird species, and mapped out the placement of the birdhouses to minimize inter and intraspecies conflict. They came and hung the houses last Monday - it was a thrill to have them all visit the farm! And you know the students did a great job when the birds started moving in the very next day!

We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Halie Goodspeed’s Engineering Design Lab class at Freeport High School this spring on an integrated pest management project! We dropped off a load of pine boards yesterday, which the students will transform into 30+ bird houses to help control insect pests and rodents on the farm. They are researching how to best design the boxes for each of eight species of bird, including swallows, blue birds, chickadees, wrens, and owls, and will come to the farm to help install them later in the spring.

As a no-till, no-spray farm, successful farming depends on building healthy communities — a healthy microbial community in the soil, a healthy wildlife community in the fields and forest around the farm, and a healthy community of people who make the work of the farm vibrant and purposeful.

New syrup just dropped and DAMN is it good! We knew it was going to be delicious, but didn’t expect this level of caramelly, butterscotchy goodness. Come get some at our last holiday market of the season this Sunday, 12/21, 10 am to 3 pm. You can find us in the main building, Brick South. We’ll also have our new smoked dried ghost and habanero peppers, candied ginger and ginger syrup, and our wooden hot sauce gift boxes, perfect for last minute gifts and stocking stuffers.

Update: 4 degrees Fahrenheit was a bit off last night - it actually dropped to a record-setting 1 degree! Our temperature sensor let us know that at its coldest, our greens dropped to 15 degrees under their double layer of row cover, a full 14 degrees warmer than outside! And today, once the sun had come out and the tunnel had warmed up to 45 degrees, the lettuce looks completely unfazed. Plants are amazing! We’re so glad to continue to be able to deliver tender lettuce to our CSA members even in such a cold early winter.

All bundled up! With temperature plunging to 4 degrees Fahrenheit tonight, we’ve tucked our greens in under two layers of extra thick row cover, and we’re holding our breath hoping that they’ll make it through. Greens that grow up in cold weather have more sugars, which act as a kind of antifreeze. Some greens (like spinach) have a ton, and they’ll make it through just about anything. Others, like lettuce, aren’t as robust, even when they’ve grown in the late fall and early winter. Here’s hoping that when the sun comes out and we peek under the row cover, the last of our lettuce is still vertical!
